Many people in the world strongly believe astrology and many others simply ignore it. What is the truth about astrology? Is it helpful to us in predicting the future?
I myself am not an astrologer and was wavering with the above questions for long until I came across Swami Sri Yukteswar’s wisdom in Autobiography of a Yogi by Yogananda.
Let us start with an example. You are driving a car on a high way at a speed of 60 mph. You need to reach a destination at a distance of 120 miles. When can you expect to reach your destination? By a simple calculation, I can ‘predict’ that you will be at the destination in another 2 hours. Your immediate reactions might be – what if you change the speed, what if you take a break on the way?
Astrology works in the same way. When astrology predicts the future, it is based on some past conditions and you as the driver of your life, can change your future, just like you can change the time to reach your destination in the above example.
There are two useful aspects in this:
1) Using astrology, we can analyze our past and present conditions and then predict our likely future.
2) We as human beings have our own individual will and we can change our course by putting our efforts in the desired direction.
This concept is very empowering that astrology does not mean fate that we have to compulsorily accept.
What is the basis of astrology?
All the creation is vibratory in nature. All the planets, trees, animals, human beings have different vibrations. A child takes birth when the overall vibrations of its environment and planetory position is in harmony with its vibraiton. So by observing planetory conditions at the time of brith it is possible to understand the vibratory nature of a person and predict a possible course of action based on this set of conditions.
The purpose of analyzing one’s birth chart is not for sealing one’s fate but to give an idea on where the person is possibly heading to and to encourage him/her to chage the life for better by putting his/her conscious will and effort.
All of us can overcome our limitations because we are the ones who created our limitations in the first place.
In the words of Sri Yukteswar, “Superstitious awe of astrology makes one an automation, slavishly dependent on mechanical guidance. The wise man defeats his planets – which is to say, his past – by transferring his allegiance from the creation to the Creator.”
So we can use astrology as a compass in our life and then change the course of our direction based on this knowledge.
